Today I
worked on designing the front cover, after doing a lot of research on the codes
and conventions of music magazines, I found it really fun actually planning out
my own ideas.
As you can
see the final title of the magazine I decided on was: Acapella. I chose this
name because, to sing acapella means to sing alone, and I thought it would work
well as the name because it shows that the magazine can stand alone, and still
stand out from the rest, and still make an impact.
I have
chosen to use a font that looks like the kind of signs you would find one
Broadway, as I wanted to emphasize the show-biz feel of the magazine, and give
it a vintage feel (As vintage is a big trend at the moment among women, and I
feel like it’s a bit different to the usual glossy straight edged magazines).
As you can see, I want to embellish the “A” of Acapella, by adding a border of
lights, like you would find around a celebrity’s/artists dressing room mirror.
I think this could look really bold and make the mast head stand out; also by
embellishing the “A”, if this magazine was stacked on the shelf, usually the
left hand side of the magazine is the side left on show, so people would be
able to locate my magazine more easily by having this emphasized letter to look
for.
I think I
am going to colour the masthead a cream/beige colour, and then the outer
boarder of the “A” I want it to be a cornflower/baby blue colour, as I think
the two colours will compliment each other really well.
The rest of
the text will follow the colour scheme I have chosen.
As you can
see I am going to use a badge on the cover, but I am not sure whether I want it
to be in the top or bottom right hand corner. But I decided to add a badge,
because the majority of the magazines I looked at had a badge on their front
cover.
The main
cover lines will run down the left and right hand side of the main image, and I
think I want to use the text wrap tool so the text flows smoothly around the
image.
I am going
to use a lot more fonts on the front cover of this magazine, than I did on the
front cover of my school magazine, because when I looked at the front covers of
music magazines, I found that they usually
used around 4-6 different fonts. So I have decided to use the different
fonts for emphasis (for example: I am going to but the name “Eliza” in a
different font, as it will draw attention to the name, and people will realise
who the magazine is featuring).
The front
cover image will be positioned in the centre of the page underneath the
masthead.
Overall I
think this design really reflects the style that my target audience will relate
to, as it’s clean cut and simple, but with the subtle embellishments the
magazine still has a captivating edge.
